Sleeve gastrectomy

Currently the most commonly used surgical procedure
in the treatment of obesity.

The procedure is recommended for people suffering from severe obesity and those suffering from chronic diseases (e.g. hypertension). The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia.

The effectiveness of the procedure is very high and guarantees spectacular effects. Along with the loss of weight also other health problems disappear.

Gastrectomy

During the surgery, approx. 4/5 of the stomach is excised. The left volume is usually about one hundred and a few dozen millilitres which directly translates to the amount of food consumed by the patient during a meal.

A significant effect of the surgery is also a reduction of the sense of hunger by excising the part of the stomach which produces ghrelin, i.e. the “hunger hormone”.

Advantages

Sleeve gastrectomy is an incredibly effective procedure and it leads to a significant weight loss
and resolving of other diseases accompanying obesity.

Reduction of the excess weight

Up to 70-80% reduction of excess weight. The procedure also fosters the adoption of healthy eating habits.

Quicker sense of satiety

Smaller volume of the stomach means smaller volume of the ingested food and faster occurring sense of satiety.

Often – positive metabolic effect and resolving of diseases

Weight dependent diseases, such as hypertension/type 2 diabetes, disappear along with the loss of weight.

Recommendations

Patients, whose BMI is greater than or equal to 40 kg/m2 (even from 35 kg/m2 when obesity is accompanied by complications) – such as type-2 diabetes, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia.

  • The patient is qualified for a procedure on the basis of the last, highest and documented weight.
  • The surgery is primarily a restrictive surgery (restricting the volume of the stomach) and therefore it does not substantially impair the absorption of vitamins or macro-/microelements from the digestive tract.

Contraindications

The treatment formula is restrictive – the patient after the treatment must eat small meals and watch for the recommended diet.

  • Pregnant women and people not intending to adhere to the postoperative recommendations also should not undergo surgical treatment of obesity.
  • Pregnant women or women planning to get pregnant within the next 12 months cannot undergo surgical treatment of obesity.

  • Patients addicted to alcohol or drugs cannot be qualified for the surgical treatment either.

  • In the case of patients with severe concomitant diseases, a balloon therapy may be recommended as a preparatory step for the surgical treatment.

Diagnostics
  • The following assessments are conducted before a procedure: surgical, cardiological, endocrinology, pulmonological, gastroenterologic, psychological, dietary.
  • Examinations performed during the patient’s consultation: biochemical profile, endocrinological profile, gastroscopic tests, abdominal ultrasound, echocardiography, spirometry, chest radiograph.
  • If necessary, we conduct further examinations (e.g. computerised tomography (CT), examinations of the upper section of the digestive tract using contrast medium).
  • Diagnostics last 1–2 days and are carried out immediately before the procedure. Thanks to this, the patient entering the stage of surgical treatment is the one that has been fully diagnosed, which considerably minimises the risk associated with surgical treatment.
