Intragastric Balloon

An alternative for a classic bariatric surgery.
The procedure is non-surgical, reversible and safe.

Bioenteric Intragastric Balloon (BIB) is a safe method for losing unwanted kilograms – a balloon placed in the stomach is big enough to ensure that there is no possibility of it coming outside.

Balloon

The procedure consists of introducing into the stomach a special balloon filled with liquid and/or air (up to about 700ml) – the balloon reduces the maximum volume of the stomach and, as a result, a patient feels full even after eating a small meal. The balloon remains in the stomach for about 6 months and causes the patient to develop new eating habits. 

The BIB is also a perfect solution before surgical treatment of obesity. It should be underlined that this method does not affect the process of digestion and does not require the patient to take additional diet supplements. Post procedural complications are extremely rare.

Intragastric balloon is a great way to prepare the patient for the next stage of treatment – the surgical stage. This is particularly important for patients who are very obese or are suffering from concomitant illnesses, significantly impaired by the patient’s condition.

The loss of a dozen or even dozens of pounds during balloon therapy makes subsequent surgical treatment much safer.

The procedure allows for significant weight loss and developing of patient’s proper eating habits.

No contraindications
related to sport activity

Gastric balloon does not exclude taking up physical activity, unless the contraidications related to sport are a result of other diseases.

Significant loss of excess weight
(20 kg on average)

The procedure leads to a weight loss and facilitates the development of healthy eating habits which help to maintain adequate figure in the future.

Recommendations

Procedure intended for people who cannot or do not want to take up surgical treatment and for severely obese people who plan surgical treatment, but are recommended to lose weight before the procedure.  

 

  • According to the recommendations for surgery, BMI cannot exceed 40.
  • Intragastric balloon can be also used in very obese patients (BMI >60) and overweight people.
  • The procedure is completely reversible and safe.
  • The treatment requires patients to adhere to doctor’s recommendations and follow-up visits.

 

Contraindications

Due to specific contraindications the procedure cannot be performed in people with inadequate physical and mental health.

 

  • Gastric balloon cannot be used by people who underwent surgeries on the stomach, suffering from mental disorders, cancer and those who are addicted – to alcohol or drugs.
  • Contraindications for procedure also include anorexia, bulimia and pregnancy.
  • Breastfeeding women also shouldn’t undergo the procedure.
  • Some of the contraindications may be of a temporary character.
  • It should be remembered that the final decision is will be made by a doctor.

Diagnostics
  • The following assessments are conducted before a procedure: surgical, cardiological, endocrinology, pulmonological, gastroenterologic, psychological, dietary.
  • Examinations performed during the patient’s consultation: biochemical profile, endocrinological profile, gastroscopic tests, abdominal ultrasound, echocardiography, spirometry, chest radiograph.
  • If necessary, we conduct further examinations (e.g. computerised tomography (CT), examinations of the upper section of the digestive tract using contrast medium).
  • Diagnostics last 1–2 days and are carried out immediately before the procedure. Thanks to this, the patient entering the stage of surgical treatment is the one that has been fully diagnosed, which considerably minimises the risk associated with surgical treatment.
