Gastric bypass

Incredibly effective bariatic surgery. The procedure is particularly recommended to people suffering from advanced obesity – those affected with type-2 diabetes and to whom traditional methods of weight loss proved to be ineffective.

Performing gastric bypass surgery is a guarantee of excess weight reduction – even up to 85%. The effectiveness of this method is based on the reduced stomach volume as well as reducing the length of the intestine in contact with the food – ingesting large amount of food is simply impossible.

Gastric bypass is the best bariatric surgery which has successfully been used since decades. Any other surgical method is compared to the gold standard which is the bypass to this day.

Bypass

The surgery consists of creation of a small, about 50 ml in volume, pouch from the upper stomach and making anastomosis, which impacts in a significant way the processes of absorption and digestion of food in the intestines. Therefore, the surgery is not only restrictive in nature (volume of the food ingested), but also limits the absorption of the consumed food.

The surgery is especially recommended to patients with type 2 diabetes and patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease. In many patients who have undergone surgery, we observe resolution of the above diseases.

Advantages

The method is effective and efficient due to the strong control of the amount of ingested food.

A reduction of 65-85% of excess weight

Gastric bypass guarantees the loss of majority of excess weight. The method allows also for reduction of food absorption and adoption of healthy eating habits.

Often – positive metabolic effect

Along with reduction of excess weight, other diseases accompanying obesity – such as diabetes and hypertension – are resolved.

Suppresses appetite

The procedure is especially recommended to people who cannot abstain from eating large amounts of food – particularly sweets.

Recommendations

The method is suitable for all those people in whom other weight loss methods do not work.

  • Patients with a BMI greater than or equal to 40 kg / m2 (even from 35 kg / m2 if patients suffer from complications – speech about type 2 diabetes, hypertension or hypercholesterolemia) are referred to the procedure.
  • The operation is a disabling operation, which means that in addition to the restrictive element – limiting the volume of food intake, it has a limiting effect on the amount of food being absorbed.

  • The procedure is recommended especially to people suffering from gastroesophageal reflux and type 2 diabetes.

  • The patient should follow the doctor’s instructions and undergo appropriate rehabilitation.

Contraindications

Age is a contraindication for the procedure – children and people over 65 year of age cannot undergo the surgery.

  • Patients must be ready for the changes related to the functioning of gastrointestinal tract and the necessity to watch the diet.

  • Patients addicted to alcohol or drugs cannot be qualified for the surgical treatment either.
  • In the case of patients with severe concomitant diseases, a balloon therapy may be recommended as a preparatory step for the surgical treatment.

Diagnostics
  • The following assessments are conducted before a procedure: surgical, cardiological, endocrinology, pulmonological, gastroenterologic, psychological, dietary.
  • Examinations performed during the patient’s consultation: biochemical profile, endocrinological profile, gastroscopic tests, abdominal ultrasound, echocardiography, spirometry, chest radiograph.
  • If necessary, we conduct further examinations (e.g. computerised tomography (CT), examinations of the upper section of the digestive tract using contrast medium).
  • Diagnostics last 1–2 days and are carried out immediately before the procedure. Thanks to this, the patient entering the stage of surgical treatment is the one that has been fully diagnosed, which considerably minimises the risk associated with surgical treatment.
